At Australia's biggest Sheep and Wool Show at Bendigo we achieved some excellent results. We entered 4 fleece in the black and coloured section. We won a first and 2 seconds and also the Reserve Champion fine wool fleece.
Unfortunately due to Austraia Post cost increases we have reluctantly had to raise the cost of postage.
200 gram hanks are hand dyed in various colours then wound into large balls.
Fairfield Finns is an ethically run family farm at Bullengarook in Victoria’s beautiful Macedon Ranges. We breed our Finns for their exquisite, soft wool, their calm temperament and their clean breech and short tails. Our sheep are never mulesed and tail docking is unnecessary.
Finns are multiple lambing, rare, heritage breed sheep that can have up to 7 lambs in one birthing. Our highest is Quintuplets, but there have been septuplets born in Australia. Our farm is a delight in spring time with many sets of triplets flourishing in the paddocks, and we usually have some bottle fed lambs also.
We believe the friendly temperament of the Finns is inherent from being in sheds for most of the year in Finland. We have bred up black Finns from Bond Corriedales over many, many years and believe these are the only Pure bred black Finns in Australia.
Finns have recently been added to the Rare Breeds Registry and have been classed as critical in Australia because of such low numbers.
If you would like to try Finns we do have limited numbers of sheep at $800 per ewe and $1200 per ram.. We are selective in where the animals are placed. Semen is sold for $50 per straw, Australia wide and more for overseas depending on which country it is exported to.
The wool is unique in its very low prickle factor – you can wear it against your skin. In Finland it is worn as underwear throughout the winter.
Our yarn is 100% Australian. Grown here at Bullengarook, scoured at Geelong and processed at Bacchus Marsh, then spun at Wangaratta. This is some of the only Pure Finn Yarn available in Australia.
Have a look at our shop. We sell raw fleece and tops for spinning and felting, and of course our beautiful yarn.

We have a wonderful historic shearing shed on our property and our name is Shepherd – how could we not have sheep!
We have been breeding Finnsheep now for 31 years. It has been a steep learning curve but our management of our Finns has improved over the years and we can always look forward to lambing percentages of well over 200%.
After visiting Finland in 2004 we were keen to try to breed the first coloured Finns in Australia. Import of semen from Finland is almost impossible now so we have bred up from coloured Bond Corriedale sheep. Breeding for colour has also been interesting and now we have some very nice black and grey Finns.
As a passionate spinner and knitter myself I am very proud of our products and offer a 100% money back or exchange guarantee if for some reason you are not happy with your purchase.
At Bendigo Sheep and wool show in 2022 we achieved excellent results with our fleeces. We entered 3 fleece for 2 1sts & a 2nd. Our 2 coloured fleece won first and second with the first also winning "best handcraft fleece". Our white fleece won it's section in the Commercial Crossbred.
At Bendigo 2023 we again won our commercial cross bred section. We entered 3 fleece in the Black and Coloured competition and won 3 firsts. We also won the John French Memorial award for the best handcraft fleece. That's 2 years in a row. We are very proud of our coloured fleece.
Bendigo results for 2024 were 1 first 2 seconds and a Reserve Champion fine Black fleece.
We were in the process of having some black wool spun into yarn but unfortunately there was a mix up and it was not our fleece that came back. So no black Pure Finn for a while now.
